"Someone is bullying me."
The difference between someone being rude, someone being mean, and someone being a bully:
Rude = Inadvertently saying or doing something that hurts someone else.
Mean = Purposefully saying or doing something to hurt someone once (or maybe twice).
Bullying = Intentionally aggressive behavior, repeated over time, that involves an imbalance of power.
When determining if a negative interaction with a peer can be considered bullying, ask yourself if it meets the A, B, C, and D criteria of bullying.
-
A- Aggressive: The person attacks you physically, socially, or emotionally.
-
B- Balance of Power is Unequal: The balance of power is usually unequal. For example, they are bigger than you, older than you, or perceived to be more "popular" than you.
-
C- Consistent: This has happened more than once over a period of time.
-
D- Deliberate: The person did this with the intent to hurt or harm you.
If you feel like this is happening to you talk with a trusted adult, your school worker/ counselor, or principal to brainstorm ways to deal with this type of situation and decide whether or not to fill out a Bullying Referral Report
